What size viola am I?

The most reliable way to choose the correct viola size is by measuring arm length. Have the player stand upright and extend their left arm out to the side at shoulder height, with the palm facing up. Measure from the base of the neck to the centre of the palm.

This measurement gives a strong starting point, but it should not be used in isolation. A player’s overall build, including hand size, neck length, and flexibility, also plays an important role in determining the most comfortable instrument size.

Violas are measured in inches rather than fractional sizes, and unlike violins, there is no single standard “full size”. Players often choose a size based on comfort and reach rather than a fixed category.

Important tips

  • A correctly sized viola should feel comfortable to hold, without overextending the arm
  • If the instrument feels too large, it can make shifting positions and reaching notes more difficult
  • Choosing a slightly smaller size is often better than using one that is too large
  • As players grow, it’s normal to move up in size over time
  • A teacher or music store can help confirm the best fit in person
What is included in a viola Enrico outfit?

An Enrico viola outfit includes the Viola, FPS bow, a quality protective case, Enrico polish cloth, Enrico name tag, and rosin. This provides everything needed for students to begin lessons and practice straight away.

Is a viola harder to play than a violin?

The viola is slightly larger and produces a deeper tone than a violin, but the playing technique is very similar. Many beginners start on viola without any issues, especially with the correct size instrument.

How do I know if a viola is the right size?

When holding the viola, the player should be able to comfortably reach around the scroll without fully extending the arm. If it feels too stretched or uncomfortable, a smaller size is recommended.

What’s the difference between Student Plus and Student Extra violas?
